Finnish dogs to get wolf-attack vests

Dec 13, 2016

The BBC carries news of a new scheme in Finland to reduce predation of dogs by wolves. The plan is to outfit the dogs with vests containing canisters of chili powder, meaning that if a wolf takes a bite of the vest it'll end up with a muzzle-full of chili.

The vests will be tested in the spring and it's hoped will reduce the number of dogs killed by wolves in the Nurmes region, in the east of Finland.

Wolves are protected in Finland under EU law, but that hasn't stopped a hunt that culled 50 - or 17% of the population of the animals - taking place last winter.
