Swedish wolf cull courts controversey

A wolf cull, totalling 16 out of an estimated 270 wolves, is currently underway in Sweden.

There are ongoing arguments on both sides in Sweden at present, with the EU and environmentalists saying the wolves should be protected (as indeed they are under EU law), whereas the hunting and farming communities say there should be fewer wolves and hence support the cull.

Sweden's remnant wolf population is rather isolated genetically and there have been calls for a number of years to try and encourage wolf migration in order to freshen the gene pool. However, given the incumbent government's policy of culling wolves, such a move looks unlikely for the foreseeable future.
